Gun Buying Made Easy

Purchasing a firearm online in Tennessee involves buying from a seller, selecting a local Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) for transfer, and passing a background check upon pickup. No special permits are required to own or buy guns, and there is no state registry. The process includes mandatory, often instant, TBI background checks.

Choose Your Firearm & Retailer

Purchase your firearm from an online dealer (e.g., Buds Gun Shop, Palmetto State Armory, Primary Arms, GunBroker.com, etc).  If you need advice on what to buy or where to buy it from please contact us for recommendations.

Choose Brown Shed FFL

During the checkout process, you will be asked who you would like to use as your FFL dealer.  We have relationships with many online firearm retailers so you may see Brown Shed FFL listed as a dealer already.  If you don't see us, don't worry, sites will give you instructions on how to select your own dealer.

Here is our info in case you need to supply it to the retailer:

Brown Shed FFL will accept the shipment from your online retailer and log the firearm into its inventory.  Do not come to the Shed quite yet, logging can an take up to 24 hours and we'll reach out to you when we're ready to set up a meeting for transfer.

During the transfer meeting we will do a few things:

1.  Inspect the firearm for defects before initiating the transfer.

2.  You will provide a valid, government-issued photo ID with your current, accurate address.

3.  You will fill out form 4473 electronically for the ATF.

4.  Brown Shed FFL will initiate a required background check through the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

5.  Pay the transfer fee to Brown Shed FFL to complete the transfer

Tennessee Specifics

  • Waiting Period: There is no waiting period for firearm purchases in Tennessee.
  • Permits: A concealed carry permit is not required to purchase or own a firearm.
  • Address Discrepancies: If your ID address does not match your current address, bring a second government-issued document (e.g., vehicle registration, voter ID) to prove residency.
  • Failed Background Checks: If not approved, you cannot take your firearm with you.  We'll help you understand the TBI appeal process.
